Fit Friday: Ticks

It's that time of the year again, the flowers are blooming, the grass is green, and the ticks are out.

If you are like me, I like camping with my humans, hiking with dad, and roaming the farm.

Check out this great Infographic about being tick smart.

Here are some ways to stop ticks from biting your dog. Make sure to consult your veterinarian first, before using any tick prevention on your dog:
  • Spot-On Treatments
  • Oral Medications
  • Shampoos
  • Tick Dips
  • Tick Collars
  • Powders
  • Tick Sprays
  • Treat the House and Lawn
  • Checking Your Dog
  • Keeping Dogs Indoors

Depending on where you live in the U.S. your risk factors may vary. Of the many different species of ticks found throughout the world, only a select few bite and transmit disease.

They also make tools to help remove ticks effectively.

How to remove a tick:
  • Use fine-tipped tweezers to grab the tick as close to the skin as possible.
  • Pull upward with steady, even pressure.
  • After removing the tick, thoroughly clean the area and wash your hands.
  • Make sure to keep an eye on the area where the tick was to see if an infection develops. If the skin remains irritated or infected, make an appointment with your veterinarian.

  1. Our town parks are fine but the big deer parks are a nightmare for ticks. We have our treatment regularly but luckily we can avoid those parks and stay in the tick free ones. Have a fabulous Friday.

  2. We HATE ticks. Luckily we don't have a lot around here, but every once in awhile one of them little buggers sneaks onto Jack or Maggie. I like that tick twister thing -looks cool. Thanks for joining the Hop!

  3. We recently avoided a hiking trail because it has ticks, rattle snakes and poison oak. I don't care how scenic it is, not going there!

  6. Ew, ticks are gross. We have a lot of them down here, too. I have heard great things about Seresto (sp?) collars. Have you tried them?
