I'm excited to share with you an amazing book called Dog
Medicine: How My Dog Saved Me From Myself, a memoir written by Julie Barton
herself.
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI),
an estimated 16 million American adults (almost 7% of the population) had at
least 1 major depressive episode last year. Julie's story is just one of many
Americans out there who struggle with depression.
Here is the blurb from the back of this great book:
At twenty-two, Julie Barton collapsed on her kitchen floor in Manhattan. She was one year out of college and severely depressed. Summoned by Julie's incoherent phone call her mother raced from Ohio to New York and took her home.
Psychiatrists, therapists and family tried to intervene, but nothing reached her until the day she decided to do one hopeful thing: adopt a Golden Retriever puppy she named Bunker.
Dog Medicine captures in beautiful, elegiac language the anguish depression, the slow path to recovery, and the astonishing way animals can heal even the most broken hearts and minds.
As you learn about
Julies journey from hitting rock bottom, hearing about her abusive past and how
a dog name Bunker changed her life, you will find it hard to put this book
down. But, make sure you have a tissue box close by. One moment my mom was
laughing and the next she would be crying.
My favorite part of this book, when you were hearing Julie's
story, you were also learning about Bunker's journey as well. You learn that
when Julie had her breakdown in New York, that was the same day Bunker was
born. This was a great way to parallel the two journeys until they became
one.
If you love reading about animal-human bonds this definitely
a powerful one you don't want to miss. With that being said, I highly recommend
this book to everyone out there. There are some tough parts to read, I would
recommend this book for an adult audience.
This book will be released on November 10th. You can
pre-order you copy now on Amazon for $11.49 (Amazon Prime) HERE.

People don't realize how much dogs do for people every day. They should be treated with the utmost love and respect.
ReplyDeleteOh my :)....I have the most precious and loving little rascal of a Cocker Spaniel,Beauregard. He is a tri-colored fun loving boy who thinks everyone wants his hugs and kisses. While I had much trepidation with letting strangers pet our 1st dog there is none with this boy.he loves everyone. He thrives on attention.

My lab Toby is such a good boy! He's so friendly and loves everyone he meets. :)
ReplyDeleteDogs provide unconditional love and routine. You have to get up to let them out if you have a fenced in yard or walk them if you don't. While you might not feed yourself, you have to feed the dog. There is much to learn about the benefits of the dog/human relationship.
ReplyDeleteDogs are amazing! I love reading stories about how they help people heal or cope with difficult issues. Sounds like a wonderful book!
ReplyDeleteAmazing story. Dogs are wonderful! I'm so glad Bunker and Julie found each other.
ReplyDeleteWe dogs are amazing creatures! Mom isn't much of a reader, though, so we won't enter.
ReplyDeleteI also credit my Golden with saving my life. I have severe depression and anxiety and have suffered a couple of losses. I had given up hope until this fluffy like ball of Golden fur tumbled into my life. It doesn't cure everything but makes life better.
ReplyDeleteWe love our pup Rascal :)
ReplyDeleteMy rescue furbaby, Lady Girl, is a border collie/black lab. She is loving and protective. She alerts me when my husband is falling by barking and running to him. When I get him up to move around the house, she gets in line behind me. We are soul mates. She understands what I say and, so far, hasn't repeated any secrets. She does try to talk.
ReplyDeleteOur rescue pups, Tasha and Nakita, are Siberian huskies. They are quite fun and keep us young!
ReplyDeleteOur dog Sam is a rescue puppy.
ReplyDeleteWe have an English bulldog! He's the best.
ReplyDeleteWe love our pitbull mix. Dogs bring so much joy to a home.

Dogs and pets in general are definitely therapeutic ! I look forward to reading her book!
ReplyDeleteDogs are so awesome! I've been lucky enough to have dogs for most of my life. The one I miss the most was the one that grew up with me. We got her when I was 8 or 9 and she died when I was 25. If it is up to me, I'll always have a dog.
ReplyDeletei have 3 min schnauzer girls, Evie, 14, Tressa, 6 and Harley 5, Tressa and Harley are first cousins, their grandfather was the top winning sr mini schnauzer in the country b4 he passed and the dad was a top winning dog....Harley's mom was a singleton and spoiled rotten just like Harley, but i loved her, i wanted her since she was 6 wks old but she was a beauty queen and the breeder would not sell her, so when she had puppies, her only litter, i had to have one and now i wish i had gotten 2, she had all girls, all black and silver. they are my very best friends and i love them til the moon and back. Evie has been my baby since she was 6wks old, i was her 3rd owner and she has had a rough 2 yrs...but she is hanging on...and doing better, deaf and loss most of her vision, but she still plays...and has gotten grouchy in her old age with grooming and bathing...my house is filled with dog toys all over and beds when they dont want to sleep with mom...we go to homeopathic vet and drive 180 miles to get their teeth looked at and cleaned.
