I'm excited to share with you an amazing book called Dog
Medicine: How My Dog Saved Me From Myself, a memoir written by Julie Barton
herself.
According to the National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI),
an estimated 16 million American adults (almost 7% of the population) had at
least 1 major depressive episode last year. Julie's story is just one of many
Americans out there who struggle with depression.
Here is the blurb from the back of this great book:
At twenty-two, Julie Barton collapsed on her kitchen floor in Manhattan. She was one year out of college and severely depressed. Summoned by Julie's incoherent phone call her mother raced from Ohio to New York and took her home.
Psychiatrists, therapists and family tried to intervene, but nothing reached her until the day she decided to do one hopeful thing: adopt a Golden Retriever puppy she named Bunker.
Dog Medicine captures in beautiful, elegiac language the anguish depression, the slow path to recovery, and the astonishing way animals can heal even the most broken hearts and minds.
As you learn about
Julies journey from hitting rock bottom, hearing about her abusive past and how
a dog name Bunker changed her life, you will find it hard to put this book
down. But, make sure you have a tissue box close by. One moment my mom was
laughing and the next she would be crying.
My favorite part of this book, when you were hearing Julie's
story, you were also learning about Bunker's journey as well. You learn that
when Julie had her breakdown in New York, that was the same day Bunker was
born. This was a great way to parallel the two journeys until they became
one.
If you love reading about animal-human bonds this definitely
a powerful one you don't want to miss. With that being said, I highly recommend
this book to everyone out there. There are some tough parts to read, I would
recommend this book for an adult audience.
